Festival international du film d'environnement: 116 films de 34 pays

PARIS - (AFP) - Le Festival international du film d'environnement (FIFE), qui commence mardi, présentera à Paris et sa banlieue 116 films de 34 pays, avec une compétition officielle, des débats, rencontres et programmes thématiques sur l'eau, le réchauffement climatique ou les énergies nouvelles.

Les séances, où l'entrée est libre et gratuite, se déroulent au Cinéma des cinéastes, dans le XVIIe arrondissement, avec quelques films présentés aussi dans un autre cinéma de Paris et dans cinq salles de banlieue.

Plusieurs documentaires sont au programme, dont quelques avant-premières, comme "Bovines" (France), une plongée dans la vie des vaches, en salles le 22 février.

Un focus est fait sur le cinéma sud-coréen et un autre sur le cinéma québécois, dont on pourra voir notamment "Trou story", sur les mines et leur exploitation, du chanteur et cinéaste engagé Richard Desjardins.

"C'est le seul festival de ce type en France où sont présentés des films pédagogiques sur l'action durable, ou qui dénoncent les atteintes à l'environnement", a rappelé devant la presse Jean-Paul Huchon, le président de la région Ile-de-France, qui organise la manifestation.

Des débats sont prévus sur l'énergie durable, sur l'eau, "un bien commun à partager", autour de la conférence Rio+20, qui doit se tenir au mois de juin au Brésil... Ils vont de pair avec des projections de courts ou moyens métrages sur les mêmes sujets.

Au-delà des documentaires, plusieurs films de fiction sont aussi au programme, parmi lesquels "La terre outragée", qui "raconte" le quotidien de la ville de Prypiat après Tchernobyl.

La programmation inclut des films pour jeune public, dont le film d'ouverture, Zarafa".

Une "nuit de l'apocalypse", le 11 février au soir, propose deux "éco-thrillers" inédits de science-fiction, "allégories sur les dangers du nucléaire", selon M. Huchon. On pourra y revoir aussi "La nuit des morts-vivants" de George Romero, de 1968.

'Fishermen catch giant whale shark'

Fishermen in Pakistan have reeled in a dead 12m whale shark which they found floating off the coast of the port city of Karachi.

It took several cranes four hours to pull the seven-tonne fish ashore as hundreds of onlookers gazed on at Karachi Harbour, Pakistan's Express-Tribunereported.

"It was dead when my men found it," boat owner Muhammad Yousuf said.

Fisheries dealer Qasim Niazi bought the shark for 200,000 rupees (A$2000), and plans to charge viewers to see it at a local auction house. Karachi Fish Harbour Authority officials say the shark's fins could then be sold in China, where they are considered a delicacy. Shark liver oil is also used to make special medicines and lubricate the bottom of boats. While considered a threatened rather than endangered creature, the size of whale sharks means they are not particularly common. The largest fish in the world, they are a protected species under Australian law. The gentle giants are not known to harm humans and eat mostly plankton.

Amazônia perdeu mais de 200 km² de florestas nos últimos meses de 2011

Os números são do Sistema de Detecção do Desmatamento em Tempo Real (Deter), divulgados pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe). Nos meses da estação chuvosa na Amazônia, o Inpe agrupa os alertas em uma base bimestral ou trimestral, para melhorar a qualidade da amostragem.
Em novembro, os satélites observaram 133 km² de novos desmatamentos e, em dezembro, mais 74,6 km². Nos mesmos meses de 2010, o Inpe havia registrado 113,61 km² e 21,31 km² de derrubadas, respectivamente. No entanto, por causa das diferenças nas condições meteorológicas, o instituto evita comparações entre os períodos. Em 2011, as nuvens cobriram 47% da Amazônia em novembro e 44% em dezembro, o que dificulta o registro dos satélites.
Considerando os dois últimos meses do ano, o Pará liderou o rol do desmatamento no período, com 58,86 km² a menos de florestas. Mato Grosso perdeu 53,8 km² de mata nativa, seguido por Roraima (29,24 km²).
O Deter, que revela dados mensais de desmatamento, monitora áreas com mais de 25 hectares e serve para orientar a fiscalização ambiental. Além do corte raso (desmatamento total), o sistema registra a degradação progressiva da floresta.

Passeata contra Belo Monte nas ruas paulistas....

Eu não poderia deixar de compartilhar minha última passagem por São Paulo, onde estive presente na ONG BRASIL e também fui documentar a interessante passeada contra a BELO MONTE - Usina que deve fornecer energia para 60 milhões de pessoas, mas que com sua obra vai trazer a remoção de 5988 famílias(ou seja, 20 mil pessoas terão de deixar suas casas!), além disso 100km do Rio Xingu terão a vazão reduzida, ou seja: simplesmente 952 índios serão afetados!!!

Para a construção do canal, serão removidos 100 milhões de metros cúbicos de floresta, que encheriam 40 mil piscinas públicas.

Não podemos aceitar que a terceira maior Usina do planeta seja efetivamente infiltrada no meio da Floresta Amazônica e cause todos esses danos ambientais e sociais.

Rocinha: A maior favela da América Latina, agora pacificada.

Chegando no Brasil uma das minhas maiores surpresas foi a notícia de que a comunidade da Rocinha, a maior favela não apenas do país, como de toda América Latina tido sido pacificada.

Fiquei interessada em ver de perto a presença da UPP(Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora) e fotografar a vida cotidiana nesta parte da cidade.

Ao lembrar da morte do cinegrafista Gelson Domingo durante a operação do BOPE (que foi apenas há um mês atrás), inevitavelmente refleti profundamente na profissão na qual nos engajamos e nos riscos que nos colocamos para informar ao público em tempo real as guerras do mundo.

Faço um luto à morte do colega e meu ode à paz mundial !

Na rota de duas horas e meia que fiz pela região, eu não vi nenhum bandido armado ou algum sinal de grande risco. O policiamento está presente na beira da favela, dentre outros serviços sociais incentivando os moradores a tirar documentos como por exemplo, a carteira de trabalho.

A melhor maneira é combater a violência, é também combater aos estigmas que criamos pelo medo dessas comunidades.

Brasil: Do Rio de Janeiro ao Acre -
Amazonia: "Os tres tempos"

Retornando ao Brasil, pais de minha origem eu passei 3 semanas no Acre(na fronteira com o Peru) fotografando o quotidiano de 3 tribos indigenas.
O trabalho foi interessante e desafiador, afinal o universo indigena ainda era desconhecido para mim.

Apesar de ter ido na Amazonia em 2006 e ter realizado um trabalho com o Greenpeace contra as empresas que causam o massivo deflorestamento, eu tive nesse retorno uma experiencia completamente diferente.

Conheci as tribos; Kuntanawa, Huni Kuin e Ashaninkas, sendo recebida por suas liderancas com muito respeito e gentileza.

Tambem aprendi com o tempo que passei nessas terras, um pouco da cultura indigena que tanto agrega sabedoria e compartilha valores que poucos tem o privilegio de conhecer tao de pertinho. Por esta razao e o fato dessa parte do mundo precisar realmente de atencao, aqui estou para mostrar um pouco da Amazonia atraves do meu olhar.

Exposição no mês de outubro é na Itália!

Exposição em Viareggio, Itália - Durante o "Maremoto Festival".

A exposição está ocorrendo neste momento em La Spezia, no Porto Lotti. O navio "Brigitte Bardot" continuará aberto para visitas essa semana, antes de seguir caminho até a Austrália, onde começa a próxima campanha baleeira na Antártida.

As fotos expostas mostram as mais recentes campanhas(baleeiras e também em proteção ao atum), realizadas pela ONG Sea Shepherd, do Pólo Sul às Ilhas Feroes.

Eu fotografei nos últimos dois anos as campanhas: "Waltzing Matilda"(Antártida), "No Compromise"(Antártida), "Blue Rage"(Mar Mediterrâneo) e "Ferocious Isles"(Ilhas Feroes) e a próxima será a "Divine Wind"(Antártida).

A Inspiração das mulheres do mar III : Laura Dakin

Eu já tinha feito um post aqui no blog com uma entrevista que eu fiz com a Laura no ano passado, mas não tinha mencionado o quanto ela também me inspira em seu ativismo e dedicação. Acho seu trabalho incrível não apenas pelas atividades a bordo dos navios da Sea Shepherd(dando suporte à causas tão nobres), mas também na culinária consciente que ela faz.

Ela tem vinte e oito anos, nascida em Bermudas mas criada entre a Inglaterra e Austrália. Embarcou no "Farley Mowat" em 2004 com a posição a bordo de engenheira assistente e finalmente acabou terminando na cozinha depois de saber que havia uma vaga liberada. Os navios da Sea Shepherd são todos veganos, o que quer dizer que não há nenhum produto animal.

Laura é trabalhadora e garante todos os dias três refeições para uma média de 40 tripulantes. Um trabalho de criatividade e sensibilidade para respeitar cada cultura(no ano passado foram mais de 24 nacionalidades diferentes embarcados na última campanha na Antártida que estive fotografando, a "Operation No Compromise"). Um trabalho que demanda muito carinho na preparação de cada prato, mas também saber o que colocar na mesa. Produtos que respeitem a natureza e garantam a qualidade nutricional. Um verdadeiro desafio!

Ela também trabalhou voluntariamente na Tailândia na proteção e denúncia de maus tratos aos elefantes, adora viajar para Índia, e ela jamais cozinha sem ter uma boa seleção musical que pode ir do rock'n'roll metal a Edith Piaf!

O mundo agradece pela sua bela existência, seu engajamento e coração de ouro, justo e veradeiro!

É Natal a bordo do "Steve Irwin" e Laura feliz agradece seu presente de amigo-culto(Secret Santa).

Degustando guloseimas no seu tempo livre entre as amigas.

Durante os momentos de folga, ela passa pela ponte de comando para se familiarizar com as atividades, destinações e planos contra os baleeiros no Oceano Austral.

Na intimidade da sua cabine, escrevendo receitas novas para seu livro.

No aniversário de cada tripulante tem um bolo diferente que sai do forno preparado com muito amor!

Cozinhando para a janta: Salsichas veganas para colocar na sopa de letilhas! Hummm...

Depois do café da manhã pronto, ela se dá conta que cortou o dedo em um movimento inesperado do navio. Desafios que existem na cozinha quando a meteorologia não colabora....

- As memórias do Golfo do Aden -

Ontem eu tive um jantar com meu amigo francês Antoine Montagne, e falamos sobre nossas perigosas aventuras nas nossas viagens pela África. Cada um com seu país e experiência. Então eu lembrei imediatamente de um episódio quando passava pelo Golfo do Aden.

Eu estava fazendo apinéia quando de repente percebi que havia um grupo de homens em um barco de cor vermelha e um motor de 250cv que se aproximava do Papaya, veleio que morei e viajei por alguns países saindo da Ásia até a Europa.

O barco vermelho se aproximou do Papaya, colocou a âncora e com o motor já parado, um dos tripulantes estava prestes a embarcar no veleiro. Fiquei aterrorizada, e rapidamente peguei o dingue para retornar ao Papaya e defender território. A distância não era grande, então cheguei à tempo antes que o tipo estranho embarcasse na minha "casa".

A primeira iniciativa foi pegar o rádio e informar os outros velejadores que estavam há algumas milhas de distância para nos socorrer. Em seguida, o desafio foi saber como interagir com os "estranhos". Procurei pensar que eram apenas pescadores, pessoas que simplesmente buscavam o que comer e beber.

Não sabia a origem deles. Ninguém falava inglês, francês ou um idioma que eu pudesse rapidamente identificar. Eles poderiam vir do Iêmen ou Somália, pensei!

A tensão aumentava quando tentavamos nos comunicar com eles. Era uma comunicação agressiva, de quem manda e não sabe pedir. Ao mesmo tempo não havia resposta no rádio dos velejadores franceses que eu havia contactado e sabia que estavam pelas redondezas. A solução foi para mim foi oferecer leite, água e alguns biscoitos. Nada de álcool, afinal era raro termos álcool a bordo do Papaya.

Passados cerca de 20 minutos, finalmente houve uma resposta no rádio. Era um dos navegadores que conhecíamos que estava há 15 milhas de distância. Ufa!

Um dos "pescadores" ou chamados por muitos como "piratas", mostrou que havia um problema, uma espécie de infecção e precisava de ajuda medical. O problema era o local da sua infecção. Ele tocava a água com suas mãos, pousava em frente ao seu orgão genital e pelo que entendi, saía pûs ou algo do gênero. Ele parecia muito doente, um aspecto quase que inconsciente. Ele era magérrimo. Os outros pouco falaram, mas seus olhares eram de desespero.

Imediatamente fui buscar medicamento que havia no barco, um antibiótico normal. Expliquei com gestos que para consumir um comprimido pela manhã(ao nascer do sol) e outro a noite(na hora de dormir). Era o melhor que poderia fazer.

O leite que ofereci era de caixinha. Havia muitas caixas, então achei que poderia ser uma boa solução. compartilhar. Ainda lembro da forma em que este mesmo homem da infecçnao me olhou, depois olhou para a caixa de leite. Parecia que ele nunca tinha visto antes. Aparentemente o único acesso ao leite que eles tem é em pó, porque dura mais tempo.

Os velejadores franceses, amigos que também faziam o mesmo trajeto chegaram. Era a hora do pôr do sol. Tive a sorte de que os "piratas" decidiram partir e se contentaram com comida, leite e água. Foi tenso, mas nos saímos bem. Uma história que jamais vou me esquecer. Estava ancorada no meio de uma pequena ilha, longe da costa e de qualquer acesso à civilização.

Em momentos como esse que me vejo como sou frágil. Mesmo no meio da natureza, no meio do mar, estamos sujeitos ao crime, a violação e à imposição. O mundo precisa de ajuda! A Natureza sim, mas os homens também.

Inspiração nas Mulheres do Mar II

Desde Paris...

A inspiração do dia no tema "mulheres do mar" vai hoje para Beth Thoren.

Uma inglesa de quarenta e poucos anos e cheia de multi talentos na sua vida plena de aventuras.

Eu sempre fico encucada em falar a idade das mulheres do mar, porque sei o quanto essa "revelação" pode ser polêmica para certas pessoas. Porém ao mesmo tempo, como eu vejo enormes contrastes entre uma e outra que me inspira, acho importante dar um pouco de detalhes da sua história e experiência de vida.

E (in)felizmente às vezes(nem sempre), a idade pode mostrar certas marcas que a vida deixa com o tempo. É claro que depende da flexibilidade e abertura que cada um dá para novas oportunidades, novos passos, novas escolhas.

Beth normalmente trabalha com publicidade de empresas de grande porte, gerenciando renomados projetos, mas quando ela está a bordo do navio da Sea Shepherd ela trabalha como engenheira.

Assim que nos conhecemos a afinidade foi imediata. Ela é uma pessoa sensível, verdadeira, trabalhadora e cheia de garra. Sua determinação para fazer algo de eficaz pela natureza é inspiradora. Nunca vou esquecer essa bela amizade que se construiu no Oceano Austral. Ainda não sabemos quando vamos nos reencontrar, mas sabemos que essa amizade e admiração perdurará.

Na sala de máquinas, Beth está à trabalho junto ao engenheiro-chefe Stephen. A cada 15 minutos ela verifica todas as máquinas para ver se há um vazamento de óleo, super aquecimento ou qualquer dificuldade. Ela faz duas guardas de 4hs cada por dia, sem ter dias de folga. Não existe "day-off" nos navios da Sea Shepherd.

Durante o treinamento com a tripulação, Beth mostra as saídas de emergência no caso de haver fogo na sala de máquinas. Após o treinamento no "lounge", Beth divide a tripulação em grupos para fazer uma visita no lado mais barulhento e sujo do navio. :)

Beth observa desde o convés com outras tripulantes, as baleias que dançam entre os icebergues.

Sensação plena de paz e recompensa por saber que está fazendo a coisa certa.

No fim da sua guarda, Beth visita a ponte de comando para saber os desafios da rota e as estratégias para a próxima ação contra os baleeiros. É evidente sua felicidade ao saber que mais um navio da frota baleeira foi encontrado por um dos navios da SSCS "Bob Barker". O navio baleeiro encontrado neste dia foi o "Nisshin Maru".

Às 7h durante seu café da manhã e seu pequeno momento de leitura.

Aproveitando os raros momentos de sol e calmaria, ela aproveita suas horas livres na proa do navio....

... Mas ela adora também fazer caminhadas no convés do navio. Isso mesmo, caminhadas! Mesmo havendo a limitação de 60 metros ao redor dela, isso não impede que ela faça suas caminhadas em círculos rotativos. Mesmo nos dias com meteorologias menos favoráveis, lá estava ela! Para sair da rotina, eu confesso que a acompanhei algumas vezes nessa interessante e inovadora aventura de fazer caminhadas no navio (que normalmente em Paris acontecem no Parque Luxembourg) durante os dias de calmaria, mas ao mesmo tempo muita busca pelos navios baleeiros.

Celebrating Love & Peace !

Paris, Setembro 2011.

No dia 17 de setembro eu tive o grande privilégio de celebrar/fotografar a união de Ole e Anya, dois novos amigos e colegas de profissão aqui na França. De origem russa e norueguesa, eles são repórteres de emergência em causas humanitárias, percorrendo o mundo com a missão de compartilhar uma mensagem de paz e justiça.

Eles se conheceram em Georgia há alguns anos atrás e mesmo no meio do caótico conflito do país com a Rússia, eles descretaram ali essa bonita história de amor no engajamento jornalístico para documentar o estado do país.

O evento "Love celebration" foi criado pela amiga Alma Mecattaf. Uma grande mulher, com coração nobre e acolhedor.

Esse foi o privilégio do meu final de semana! Estar em contato com pessoas que vieram aqui no planeta para fazer a diferença.

Entrar em ação vem com a determinação !

É ter consciência de fazer algo para si e o próximo!

Conversando com a Bárbara, ela me falou das principais dificuldades de estar como espiã, ver os navios da Sea Shepherd e não poder falar com os ativistas... Além de precisar fingir, fazer de conta, interagir com pessoas que não fazem parte do "mundo do bem", que matam indiscriminadamente...

São estas situações que a maioria das pessoas não imagina que um agente disfarçado passa. Tem que ter um coração forte e segurar o sangue frio, para não revelar o disfarce e colocar toda a operação em risco.

E tudo isto para poder passar informacoes privilegiadas para a equipe de frente dos navios...

Como se a sua carreira não bastasse (e basta por si só, por tudo que vc já fez), este trabalho por si só já justifica:

Inspiração nas "Mulheres do Mar"

Há alguns anos eu tenho observado as mulheres que trabalham comigo ou no mesmo ramo que o meu para poder entender melhor a mim mesma.

Digo isso porque nós temos muito em comum, e nada melhor do que buscar nessa identificação uma forma de compreender o porque que todas nós temos esse interesse em comum, o de buscar soluções práticas e eficazes por um planeta melhor.

E durante esse tempo de profunda reflexão sobre as mulheres que de certa forma "pertencem" ao mar, no momento em que elas passam mais tempo nele do que em terra(o que é totalmente o meu caso!), acabei desenvolvendo um projeto fotográfico nos últimos dois anos que se chama "As mulheres do mar". É um projeto que tem estado em constante construção porque a cada navegação que eu faço, acabo conhecendo alguém super interessante e a vontade de continuar fotografando essas mulheres nunca termina. No final, eu acabo criando uma amizade que me permite também a entrar na intimidade dessas pessoas tão sensíveis, tão doces, mais ao mesmo tempo cheias de determinação e coragem.

Porém, hoje eu finalmente me dei conta de que esse projeto sobre as mulheres nunca terá fim, mas para que eu possa fazer algo criativo e também possa compartilhar isso com outras pessoas, eu comecei então a dividir em etapas, em momentos que eu vivo com essas mulheres, em certas missões de que eu faço parte no meio do meu ativismo e paixão pela natureza.

Então vamos lá!

Coloco aqui meu primeiro exemplo de uma das mulheres que mudou a minha vida de certa forma (como muitas mudaram, cada uma de um jeito especial). Ela se chama Eva Hidalgo Pla, uma bióloga espanhola de vinte e poucos anos que conseguiu tocar meu coração e me fez lembrar do quanto é importante saber se impor na sociedade para fazer aquilo que se gosta, independente do seu sexo. Ela não tem um discursso feminista. Eva simplesmente acredita que enfrentar mares revoltos nos navios da Sea Shepherd com o objetivo de proteger os oceanos e fazer um ode a vida nos oceanos é o que faz sentido.

Nós navegamos juntas na última campanha baleeira da Sea Shepherd na Antártida entre dezembro de 2010 à março de 2011.

Obrigada por me inspirar todos os dias, bravas mulheres do mar!

À trabalho na proa do navio, em pleno oceano austral

Retornando ao porto de Wellington, na Nova Zelândia. O navio fica apenas por alguns dias para a compra de combustível, sendo assim retornando ao santuário baleeiro, com o objetivo de impedir a caça feita pelas frotas japonesas. Eva nesse momento controla as cordas chegando no porto.

Eva testa o cano d'água que é utilisado como defesa durante as ações contra os baleeiros.

É a festa de aniversário de um tripulante. Discretamente, ela escreve uma mensagem no cartão preparado pelos amigos a bordo do navio "Steve Irwin".

São 07h30 da manhã, a hora de tomar o café da manhã e se preparar para mais um dia de trabalho e ação atravessando os gélidos mares do Pólo Sul.

Com seu namorado Brian, Eva faz a limpeza da cozinha do navio após o jantar.

E durante o dia, também trabalhando....

Mulher forte, mulher verdadeira com seus sentimentos e sua paixão pelos oceanos.

A Descoberta de um tesouro emocional: NO MAR.

Quando eu estava prestes a ter minha primeira experiência navegando no Brasil, não sabia ao certo sobre como seria o meu desempenho.

Não é que eu tivesse medo ou insegurança, porque eu sabia exatamente o que eu queria para mim naquele momento. Mas houve aquele frio na barriga, simplesmente a inexperiência de uma simples jovem de 21 anos, recém-formada em jornalismo, apaixonada por fotografia e cinema.

Mas o que me fez esquecer essa dúvida sobre como eu me sairia naquela minha primeira missão POR MAR foi exatamente o meu coração aventureiro, um coracão pronto para qualquer coisa que estivesse em prol da mãe-natureza. Essa era a meu foco primordial até então.

Então eu fui convidada para embarcar no "Arctic Sunrise", um dos três navios do Greenpeace que navega o mundo inteiro para compartilhar a mensagem de preservação. Foi uma oportunidade para trabalhar na próxima campanha em proteção à Amazônia. A campanha começava em março de 2006. Nessa época eu já era voluntária e ativista da ONG por mais de dois anos no Rio de Janeiro. Eu não tive dúvida alguma sobre a minha decisão. O convite foi feito por telefone em uma ligação vinda de São Paulo e imediatamente respondi: "- Embarcar no AS para participar da próxima campanha da Amazônia? Mas é claro! Quando eu posso embarcar?".

Hesitação? Nenhuma!

A resposta foi: "-Daqui a duas semanas o navio estará no sul do Brasil e começará uma expedição parando em 7 cidades diferentes na costa do país para informar e educar pessoas sobre a crítica situação da floresta. Você embarca quando quiser a partir da chegada do navio no Porto de Santos".

A minha questão: Porque o mar se tornou parte da minha vida?

Eu sempre adorei o mar. Nascida e criada no Rio de Janeiro, tinha o hábito de passar todos os finais de semana em família na praia. Lembro de como era gostoso caminhar e nadar com meu pai na Praia do Arpoador, em Copacabana - onde ele passou maior parte da sua vida. Alguns anos depois, eu tive o privilégio de até mesmo morar de frente ao mar... então a minha relação com o oceano,o infinito e o horizonte sempre foi familiar.

Nos meus momentos mais íntimos, aqueles cheios de reflexões, eu sempre ia para o alto de uma pedra solitária em alguma praia para visualizar o oceano. Sempre achei fascinante a estatística e realidade de que 97% de água contida na Terra está nos oceanos, cobrindo três quartos de superfície na Terra. Não é incrível?

Pouco a pouco, durante as horas que passava de guarda na ponte de comando, eu fui aprendrendo sobre navegação entre uma cidade e outra que paravamos. No início eu ficava lembrando de todos os exploradores antigos que eu conhecia. Reflitia por horas em cada um deles... pensava em como eles foram bravos e fortes para se lançar no mar com tão pouco e conseguir descobrir novos pedaços de terra. A partir daquele momento eu comecei a ter muito mais respeito sobre os navegadores que nos deixaram tantas histórias ricas em aventura e extrema coragem.

As questões que tinha sobre meu desempenho no mar, logo se diluíram e finalmente eu me dei conta de que aquele Universo já fazia parte de mim, eu apenas não sabia. Então eu posso dizer que foi para mim uma verdadeira descoberta de um tesouro. Mas um tesouro interno, uma emoção, um forte sentimento. A sensação de liberdade completa. Um tesouro emocional.

Descobri que no mar, eu sou menor do que imaginava de quando eu estava em terra.

Descobri que desde o mar, às vezes eu posso fazer muito mais do que em terra.

(Re)aprendi valores essenciais sobre a vida:

Sobre o que se perde e o que ganha ... que tudo pode ser muito relativo e que tudo pode mudar repentinamente. Assim como a direção do vento, e até mesmo a nossa relação com o tempo.

Foi através dessa imensa sensação de liberdade que o mar me trouxe, e também por me dar conta de que através das minhas ações desde os oceanos eu poderia estar fazendo algo pelo Planeta diariamente, que continuei outras campanhas com o Greenpeace e depois de alguns anos finalmente, a transição para a ONG Sea Shepherd.

Graças a essa motivação pela proteção da natureza, eu fui levada à primeira longa viagem por mar no Brasil (depois alcançando novos oceanos e novas missões internacionalmente), onde encontrei completa afinidade com esse estilo de vida, indo sempre dos trópicos aos árticos.

E inspirada nessa veia de toda navegadora que adora exploradorar novos horizontes, sobretudo no Pólo Sul, deixo como exemplo a história de um aventureiro francês que descobri recentemente aqui em Paris através de um amigo.

As expedições de Jean-Louis Etienne me inspiraram no dia de hoje e através dessa motivação que vejo nele e em outros navegadores, eu me dou conta da importância que o mar exerce sobre a minha vida!

Marc Gaede first joined Sea Shepherd on the 1989 dolphin campaign in Costa Rica as a photographer for Outside magazine, and has participated in numerous high seas and land based Sea Shepherd campaigns ever since.
Marc has published eight books and is an internationally recognized photographer. As a United States Marine, he graduated in 1966 from the U.S. Army's combat photographic school in Ft. Monmouth, N.J., and later served as a Marine Corps photographer at Camp Pendleton, CA, as well as briefly on the amphibious assault carrier USS Iwo Jima. In 1977 he was a temporary assistant to legendary photographer Ansel Adams, and later was the Photographer-in-Residence at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona.
Marc received a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University, and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Art Center College of Design. Since 1988 he has been an instructor of photography, environmental issues, and Physical Anthropology in the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the Art Center College of Design. Marc is an elected member to the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, the Paleoanthropology Society of America, and the Evolution and Human Behavior Society.
Environmental concerns run in Marc's family. His grandfather, Irving Brant, began his environmental career in the mid 1920s with the Emergency Conservation Committee, and later as the principal environmental advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Brant is credited as the primary founder of Olympic National Park, saving the Hoh and Bogachiel rain forests under President Truman, as well as submitting Stewart Udall to President John F. Kennedy for Secretary of the Interior.

Marc himself was a co-founder of the Black Mesa Defense Fund in 1970, one of the first direct action environmental groups which was a precursor to Earth First! The BMDF direct-action campaign against the strip mining on Black Mesa, organized by the American Indian Movement and Marc in April, 1971, is considered the first modern-day environmental confrontational protest.
Marc is married to Marnie Gaede, a longtime Sea Shepherd editor, advisor, and supporter.

Barbara Veiga left Brazil in 2006 to achieve her dream: To create a better future for our planet. To do this she first joined the crew on the NGO Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise that was embarking on its Amazon campaign. A few years later she made a transition over to the conservation group Sea Shepherd founded by Captain Paul Watson and took part in their anti-whaling campaign.
She has been a photographer for two years now for the Sea Shepherd, documenting the efforts to protect whales in all seas from Japanese whaling fleet. Between artwork full of symbolism and photo reportage, her photographs combine her training in journalism and her passion for photography. In 2011, she joined the “Revolution” movement and had an exhibition in Cannes during the International Film Festival. Since then, an itinerant exhibition has been created and now Barbara Veiga is going to exhibit all over the world.

Aqui estou em Jersey, documentando a presença da Sea Shepherd junto ao líder Paul Watson, onde acabo de encontrar o respeitado observador e participante da Comissão Baleeira Internacional por mais de vinte anos, o brasileiro José Truda Palazzo.

Foi uma grande surpresa reencontrar o Truda Palazzo nesta cirunstância. Na última vez nosso encontro tinha sido um pouco mais inusitado. Foi em 2006, quando fui presa e deportada ao protestar junto ao Greenpeace em frente ao Hotel Mattiot, em St. Kitts(Caribe), onde aconteceu neste ano a discussão da Comissão Baleeira.

Ocorreu hoje o encontro das ONG's no Café JAC("Jersey Arts Centre"), onde tive a oportunidade de encontrar representantes, diplomatas, ativistas e importantes figuras que cruzei ao longo desses anos em plena dedicação pela causa.

Continuo usando o meu trabalho fotográfico para transmitir a importante mensagem de preservação ambiental e anuncio que novas missões estão porvir!

A reunião final que determina a decisão da nova cota de baleias que serão permitidas à caça para esse ano será feita e anunciada no dia 14/07/2011.

"Ativistas do Verde": Estado de São Paulo, 2011

Já tem algumas semanas que saiu no Jornal "Estado de São Paulo" no Suplemento Feminino, uma matéria que mostrou 4 ativistas exemplares no Brasil. Com toda a minha correria entre as exposições em Cannes, Mônaco e Paris, eu acabei esquecendo de postar aqui no blog no dia da publicação.

Eu tive o enorme privilégio de ser incluída nesta seleção de mulheres brasileiras que fazem a diferença e com a grande satisfação de ter o comentário da ex-Ministra do Meio Ambiente e candidata a presidência, Marina Silva. Uma mulher que tanto admiro pela sua garra e determinação na causa verde!

Sea Shepherd Receives Commendation from New Zealand

The Steve Irwin cuts through the frigid Ross Sea waters searching for the Berserk.
Photo: Barbara VeigaThe New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) released the official investigation into the loss of the Norwegian yacht the Berserk. The report concludes with an official commendation to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for the search and rescue efforts conducted by the crew of the Steve Irwin between February 22-24, 2011, in the McMurdo Sound area of the Ross Sea.
Further to this, Sea Shepherd would like to commend helicopter pilot Chris Aultman for his exhaustive and intensive 14-hour search of the McMurdo Sound area. The entire crew of the Steve Irwin is also to be commended for participating in this dangerous mission that gave cause for the ship to head straight into the teeth of the largest storm recorded in the McMurdo Sound over the last three decades.
Sea Shepherd’s rescue effort was documented by the onboard film crew, and will be televised on season four of Animal Planet’s television series Whale Wars.

Two private operators (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and New Zealand Nature Heritage Cruises) gave willingly of their vessels, Steve Irwin and Professor Khromov, and other resources to assist with significant search efforts, and should be commended.

A 63˚ Comissão Baleeira Internacional começou esta semana aqui em Jersey, onde eu estou para acompanhar os debates entre os delegados do ano de 2011.

Manifestações maiores vão começar neste final de semana, quando as reuniões começam a tomar um formato mais sério no momento em que outras figuras importantes estarão presentes durante a comissão.

No meu primeiro dia na Ilha, eu reencontrei a Natalie Fox, uma amiga surfista e ambientalista, co-fundadora da organização "Women for whales" http://www.womenforwhales.org durante uma entrevista para a revista "Jersey weekly".

As fundadoras da "Women for Whales" incentivam instalações, pinturas e colagens de crianças entre 8 à 12 anos de idade com o tema "proteção às baleias" em Jersey.

Formada também por Nori Neumann (designer) e Cordelia Brabbs (escritora apaixonada por golfinhos), a ONG "Women for Whales" promove de uma maneira bem feminina manter a determinação na luta pela vida nos oceanos através da arte, música, consciência e educação ambiental.

Aconteceu hoje às 19hs a entrega do prêmio da National Geographic & Museu de História Natural, onde fiquei entre os 20 finalistas de 3000 participantes.

O meu prêmio não foram os 10.000 euros (entregue ao primeiro colocado durante o coquetel ocorrido essa noite do concurso: "L'Homme et la Nature"), mas uma foto na exposição que fica durante todo verão no parque "Jardin de Plantes", aqui em Paris, do dia 23/06/2011 até 14/09/2011.

A exposição: "Photo Par Nature", conta com o patrocínio da Fundacão do Príncipe Albert II e FujiFilm.

Art for the Ocean!

Art for the Ocean is a celebration of the importance of our oceans and the role we must play to protect them.

Taking place on Saturday 30th April in Fremantle, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will host a special fundraiser where all guests will have the opportunity to bid on artwork produced in the theme, "oceans".

There will also be live entertainment and a special guest appearance by musician, John Butler.

This important fundraiser will raise much-needed funds to support Sea Shepherd's campaigns in 2011 - 100% of the profits from this event will be used to continue our actions to protect whales, sharks, tuna, seals and a whole range of species currently facing extinction.

A limited number of tickets are available at $60 and entry also includes drinks and canapes.

I started my career as a journalist in 2006 to fight against the injustice and destruction of nature. The oceans became my passion and I feel committed to preserve what is left using my photography as a tool.

I first worked for Greenpeace from 2004 to 2008 traveling on the ships of the organization worldwide in different campaigns. But now I also feel very grateful to donate my time and energy to Sea Shepherd which is very effective in its missions. Between 2009 and 2010 I was onboard the Steve Irwin on two campaigns: Waltzing Matilda and Blue Rage. I flew on the helicopter, jumped on the inflatables and photographed from the Steve Irwin all the crime made by the japanese whaling fleet in Antarctica and the fishing boats that contribute to the tuna extinction in the Mediterranean. All that I experienced was intense and special but I will never forget the two moments I lived on board that vessel. The first one when I saw for the first time in my life a humpback whale tale only 30 meters from me between a huge iceberg and the Steve Irwin. The second moment when I saw 800 tuna being freed off the Libyan Coast.

As an activist, conservationist I will never forget that during this year I was involved in two missions that saved 528 whales and 800 tuna. That facts and numbers made me feel really useful on this planet that needs so much care and help.

Operation No Compromise is Officially Over

Photo: Barbara VeigaThe Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker have arrived in Hobart, Tasmania. For the third year in a row, the Australian Federal Police were on the dock waiting to raid the ship at the request of the Japanese government.
As they’ve done for the last two years, Sea Shepherd is cooperating with the Australian Federal Police with their obligations to do the bidding of the Japanese government. Sea Shepherd is confident that their activities in the Southern Ocean have been non-violent and lawful.
Japan has never charged Sea Shepherd with any crime related to their activities in obstructing their illegal whaling operations in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Despite this, the Japanese government keeps demanding that Australia stops Sea Shepherd ships from entering and leaving Australian ports. Unfortunately for Japan, Australia is a democratic nation that actually needs to have a violation of the law before taking punitive action against citizens or visiting foreigners.
Senator Bob Brown of the Australian Greens Party will greet the ships and crew upon their arrival. Captains Paul Watson and Alex Cornelissen will hold a media conference with Senator Brown at 11:00 hours AEST.
Operation No Compromise is now officially over. It has been Sea Shepherd’s most effective campaign to date against illegal whaling activities in the Southern Ocean.
Sea Shepherd will be prepared to return to the Southern Ocean at the end of this year once again, if the Japanese whaling fleet returns. “We will be prepared and we will be ready,” said Captain Watson. “Our objective is to defend the integrity of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. We have done so since 2002, and we will continue to do so if there are any future threats to the sanctuary and the whales.”

Avviser kritikken

Jarle Andhøys advokat og nære venn, Nils Jørgen Vordahl, mener kritikken er feilslått.

- For Jarle og disse gutta handler det om å gjøre det umulige mulig. De har ikke mye penger eller ressurser, men de ønsker likevel å reise på tur og få fantastiske opplevelser, utenfor rammen av A4-livet. Likevel er det viktig å understreke at dette ikke er dumdristig galskap, det har Jarle bevist flere ganger. Han ville aldri utsatt vennene sine for unødig fare, sier Vordahl.

Han får støtte av tidligere ekspedisjonsdeltaker Rune «Super'n» Ohlsgaard.

- Alle er inneforstått med at det er stor risiko før man reiser ut, det er det uansett når man reiser til slike områder. Det er jo lavbudsjetturer, det er jo ikke noe tvil om det. Vi har ikke ræva full av penger, men har lyst til å gjøre ting for det, sier Ohlsgaard.

En miljøforskrift pålegger alle som vil ferdes sør for den 60. sørlige breddegrad å underrette en av nasjonene i Antarktis-traktaten om aktiviteten som planlegges.

Søknaden om å få ferdes i Antarktis skal foreligge ett år på forhånd. Det er Norsk Polarinstitutt som er Norges ansvarlige myndighet og godkjenner norsk-initiert aktivitet i Antarktis.

- Fra «Berserk« har vi ikke fått den informasjon som ligger i meldeplikten. Derfor er vi heller ikke kjent med om de hadde noen avtale om søk og redning, sier direktør for polarinstituttet, Jan-Gunnar Winther.

Det siste er et absolutt nøkkelkrav: Ekspedisjoner skal ha avtale med en operatør som har fly og kan bistå i en redningsaksjon, eller stille økonomisk garanti.

- Inntreffer noe uventet, skal den økonomiske situasjonen være avklart, sier direktøren for Winther.

Polar-direktøren sier også til NRK at «Berserk»-ekspedisjonen risikerer å få million-regningen etter leteaksjonen, siden de ikke hadde papirene i orden.

Dette skal så langt ikke være et tema for myndighetene på New Zealand, ifølge kilder VG Nett har vært i kontakt med. De vil avvente en behandling av saken i Norge før de tar en beslutning på hvem som skal ta regningen.

- Ville ikke forandret noe

Dersom «Berserk»-ekspedisjonen hadde oppfylt plikten om å underrette myndighetene, ville Polarinstituttet påpekt at de planla aktiviteten svært sent i sesongen.

Advokaten til Andhøy kjenner ikke til hva slags søknader ekspedisjonen sendte i forkant, eller om han har hatt en såkalt rednings- og søkeavtale.

- Hvis vi går ut fra at han ikke har hatt det, er det nok et spørsmål om penger. Jeg går ut fra at dette koster milllioner, og det har verken Jarle eller de som er med på disse ekspedisjonene råd til. Uansett ville det ikke forandret noe på den situasjonen som oppsto. Det var ekstremvær i området, og noen ganger er naturen sterkere enn mennesket, sier han.

Manglet noe informasjon

Nick Churchouse ved hovedredningssentralen i New Zealand, bekrefter at de aldri fant noen søknader fra ekspedisjonen.

- Det var det første vi lette etter, siden disse dokumentene inneholder mye informasjon som er viktig i den første fasen. Vi visste blant annet ikke hva slags kriseplaner båten hadde, dersom noe skjedde, sier han.

Likevel understreker redningssentralen at redningsarbeidet kom svært tidlig og godt i gang.

- Dette ligger helt i utkanten av vårt ansvarsområde, på et av de mest øde stedene i verden. At vi hadde tre skip i området, et av dem med helikopter om bord, må betegnes som et utrolig lykketreff, sier Churchouse.

Søket avsluttet for en periode

Natt til fredag ble redningsflåten som tilhører «Berserk» funnet uten spor etter mennesker.

Skipet «Steve Irwin» fortsatte å søke etter den savnede seilbåten og besetningen inntil i natt.

- De har nå blitt løst fra sine oppgaver fra vår side og er på vei til Hobart. Skipet «Professor Khromov» kommer til området i løpet av de neste dagene, og er blitt bedt om å undersøke, sier Churchouse.

– Me skulle ønska me hadde funne dei i live. Det hadde vore ein enorm triumf og ein ubeskriveleg glede. Men me må nok innsjå at Berserk-mannskapet har gått ned med båten,seier kvartermeister på «Steve Irwin», Howie Cooke.

«Steve Irwin» var den einaste båten i mils omkrins då naudsignalet frå den norske seglskuta «Berserk» blei sendt ut frå Rosshavet tysdag morgon.

Den 59 meter lange anti-kvalfangstbåten har med helikopter og eit mannskap på 37 saumfart fleire tusen kvadratmeter på tre forskjellige område utan å finna den norske seglbåten eller dei tre sakna om bord.

– Desse gutane var eventyrarar som kjende til risikoen ved å ferdast i Antarktis. Når ein først skal leggja vandringsstaven ned, finst det ikkje ein vakrare plass i verda å gjera det på enn i Antarktis, seier Cooke.

Forstår fascinasjonen

Han har tilbrakt fleire månader i isødet, i samband med ein kampanje mot japanske kvalfangarar.

Kampanjen skulle avsluttast i Sørishavet denne veka, ved markeringa av 100-årsjubileet til Roald Amundsens sydpoltriumf.

– Dette er ein ufatteleg nydeleg plass. Me har sett kvalar, pingvinar, albatrossar, selar og isfjell. Eg forstår polfararane sin fascinasjon, og trur «Berserk»-gutane sjølv ville sagt at det var ein del av leiken.

Forskingsfartøyet «Professor Kromov» vil i løpet av dei nærmaste dagane halda fram med søket etter «Berserk» på sin gjennomreise i området, men leitinga er kraftig trappa ned i det det nærmar seg månadsskifte og vinter i dei arktiske strøka.

A Terrible Tempest in an Unforgiving Sea

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson

The storm that claimed the Norwegian yacht Berserk was an awesome display of nature’s power. Three vessels experienced that tempest with three different outcomes. The 14-meter yacht Berserk with her three crewmembers most likely did not stand a chance when the fury of the winds funneling down from Mount Erebus slammed into them with what Lieutenant Commander Simon Griffith of the New Zealand Naval ship Wellington described as 182 km/h winds that "exploded off the Ross Ice Shelf." A good choice of words considering that the storm literally went off like a bomb, without notice and without much chance for avoidance or preparations.
The Berserk and her small crew were at the epicenter of the very white squall, but when their distress signal went off, two other ships were drawn into the witches brew in and around McMurdo Sound. The Wellington and her crew of 55 sailors were the closest, and the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin and her crew of 38 was the next closest vessel. In total, 96 people experienced that storm of which three did not survive.
In response to the Mayday signal, the newly commissioned ice-strengthened New Zealand naval patrol vessel HMNZSWellington turned towards McMurdo Sound as did the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin, conducting a survey of the Ross Ice Shelf some 200 miles to the east.
"As we responded, we were stuck in the most intense storm I have ever encountered in 19 years in the navy," skipper Lieutenant Commander Simon Griffith told the New Zealand media. “The intense winds built up 8 meter swells as spray turned to thick ice on the decks. Aerials, lighting, and speakers were swept away.” Griffith reported they even lost their stern light.
Three of their life rafts were ripped off and thrown into the sea, one of which was discovered the next morning by the crew of the Steve Irwin. "We still have enough on board to keep us safe," he says. In the midst of it, Griffith got word of the Christchurch earthquake; he kept it to himself for 12 hours so as not to stress members of his crew any further.
The Wellington struggled into the lee of Mount Erebus but once they entered McMurdo Sound, they got slammed again. "They were the biggest seas I have ever come across,” said Griffith.
The previous Monday, the crew of the Wellington had met the three crew of the Berserk at Back Door Bay, where Shackleton's Hut stands. "They gave us a call and asked us for a packet of cigarettes. We did not have any, but we gave them a cigar," says Griffith. The yacht was warned severe weather was coming. Severe weather however, is normal for this area and even theWellington was surprised at just how severe the storm actually became. "The yacht seemed a very sturdy, oceangoing yacht and they were three cheerful Norwegians."
Berserk leader Jarle Andhoy, 34, and Samuel Massie Ulvolden, 18, were attempting to reach the South Pole to mark the centenary of Norwegian Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition. The three left on the yacht were Robert Skaane, 34, Tom Gisle Bellika, 36, and South African Leonard Banks, 32.
Berserk needed to get permission from the Norwegian Polar Institute to sail below 60 degrees south. Official Jan-Gunnar Winther confirmed they did not have permission. This was not unusual for Andhoy, who has a reputation in Norway as a maverick adventurer.
Scott Base manager Troy Beaumont said the storm which hit the Berserk and Wellington was "a bit of a dozy."
The Steve Irwin was only hours behind the Wellington and moving at 14 knots towards McMurdo. It was not the worst storm that I have encountered but I only remember two that were more formidable, the first a typhoon in the South China Sea in 1969, and the second, a hurricane force storm off of Labrador in 1998.
It was frightening to many of my crew, although I assured them that our ship was more than equal to the challenge. However, the decks and the port side of the ship were coated in thickening layers of brine ice as the spray frozen in the super chilled air and plastered itself against the steel sides and on the decks adding tons of extra weight that had to be compensated for.
Our bow dove into the seas and plowed into the swells with a force that sent shuddering vibrations throughout the ship. Waves crashed against the port side as if we were being kicked by an enraged titan. The temperatures in the food storage area were so low that the cook had to put produce into the refrigerator to prevent it from freezing. Water pipes burst, and everything, including crew, not tied down flew about the inside making every step hazardous. Two of the crew’s bunks were flooded with freezing water from ruptured water pipes. One of our crew dislocated her shoulder, and another suffered a severe bruise to her arm. It was not a pleasant ride and heading into a storm like that was not practical – but because of the missing Berserk, we had no choice – as mariners we had a duty to respond, and we did.
The Wellington was forced to retreat back to New Zealand. We took over as the primary search vessel and although we were hopeful, those hopes were dashed when we discovered the unoccupied life raft of the Berserk. The Berserk was lost, theWellington damaged, but fortunately the Steve Irwin suffered no damage at all.
I reflected that it was such a small world. I had met Jarle Andhoy, the skipper of the Berserk years ago when he presented his film Berserk at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival. He had sailed solo down to Antarctica at 17 years of age, capsizing his vessel the Berserk I in the Drake Passage, yet skillfully recovering and completing his voyage. He was a very capable mariner. He had sailed through the Northwest Passage in the Arctic. He was not however, on the Berserk when the storm hit and I have no knowledge of the expertise of the crew that was.
It was also an irony that Andhoy and his crew were commemorating the 100^th anniversary of Amundsen’s successful discovery of the South Pole. We had been at the Bay of Whales only two days previous to use the centenary as a means of sending a message to Norway to end whaling.
I have to admit I am at a loss to understand why Andhoy and Ulvolden set out for the pole on quad bikes so late in the season. December is the time to strike for the pole, not February. It was the weather of January and February that took the lives of Robert Scott, Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Laurence Oates, and Edgar Evans in 1912. By leaving so late in the season they would have endure to endure the increasing ferocity of the approaching Antarctic winter. The scientists and workers from McMurdo were already being evacuated in anticipation of Ross Island being entrapped in ice. The reason for a late February dash to the pole is mystifying but it is not my place to judge Andhoy and his team. Perhaps that was a part of their challenge.
I do know that through experience that nature is extremely unforgiving, terribly so. Nowhere on earth is nature so dominant and cruel as in Antarctica, where the majestic beauty of this silent land shrouded in frigid whiteness proclaims boldly to all challengers that this continent controls those who visit. We do not control it.
I wrote the following poem during a less intense storm off the Antarctic coast in 2008.

The Tempest

This poem was written in January 2008 as the Steve Irwin sailed south to confront the Japanese whaling fleet. I wrote it during the storm in an attempt to capture the emotions of the crew and the groaning of the ship.

In confidence my ship sailed South,
Oblivious to danger,
I feared not the coming storm,
To such winds I was no stranger.

But amongst my crew were virgin sailors
Some still sea-sick from just the gentle motions,
For them I knew this would be a test,
And fear would dominate their emotions

The mild sea gave way to rising swells,
Whitecaps spit their salty spray
The swells did begin to rise with the tide,
And upon the dark shroud did flay,

The apprentices on the deck looked towards the rising clouds
Young eyes grew wide with growing apprehension.
Lightning crackled in the sky,
There was growing comprehension.

The tempest burst upon us like a bomb,
The wind plucked the lines in a deadly dearth
The winds wailed through the rigging,
And from dark clouds the storm gave birth.

With lightning flash the rains did lash,
And scoured the decks completely clean,
The wind rose to a frightening roar,
And howled forth like a fiend.

Like a Banshee’s mournful deadly wail,
The evil winds did taunt
Disturbing every dead sailor’s bones
From the depths they rose to haunt.

Within the gale we heard them chuckle
The aquatic ghouls put on a grisly show
They sought for us to join them,
To share in their pitiful soggy woe

“Ignore the fiends,” the Captain cried.
“Ignore the sultry Sirens too,
We shan’t be joining them tonight,
No, not this gallant crew.”

The ship did rock and it did roll,
Like a toy boat at the mercy of the gale,
Helpless we watched and kept the course,
Hoping the engines would not fail,

To drive into a Cyclone’s maw,
Is to spit into God’s merciless face,
Prayers and pleads are useless words,
When salt is all you taste.

The wind drives salt from your eyes,
It hurls brine into your frozen face,
Your skin it crawls with the crystals sharp,
This hell provides no safe place.

You watch the bow plunge and dive,
The sea assaults the lonely deck,
The hull it groans and the keel does shiver,
Terrified rats get set to jump the wreck,

The pounding increases as the winds rage on,
Glass is shattered, the lifeboats torn away,
The ship rolls and moans like a dying thing,
And the crew curses every minute of the day.

The savage winds rode on our stern,
The monstrous gale kicked us in our ass,
We surfed upon mountainous seas,
Yearning for the storm to pass.

Salted water flogged us like slaves
As we fought to keep the ship on course,
Blind and deaf we bent our backs,
My God what an awesome force!

Soaked and tired and frozen stiff,
Fingers numb and elbows sore,
Striving to stay awake and alert,
Thank God, we’re far offshore.

I shutter to think what a reef would do,
Such winds would dash us to a crushing hell,
No rocks out here to strike a lethal blow,
Each roll does strike the bell.

Sailors tossed like rag dolls across the heaving sea,
She taunts and teases and scoffs at our displeasure.
Our moans and pains mean naught to her,
Her destruction knows no measure.

And as if to illustrate her rage,
She pelts us with hardened balls of hail,
Then slathers us with hoary rotten sleet,
As the gale continues to scream and wail.

And through the wind blown rain I see,
Just how majestic her power emerges,
Admiration removes all fear,
And I hear the poetry in her howling dirges.

I smile and lick the salt from my lips,
Content to ride this storm to hell,
And in that moment the wind did sigh,
And a calm spread out upon the swell,

The sun pierced the dark grey clouds,
A golden ray did stab the deck and mast.
A rainbow struggled across the sky,
The storm was over at last.

Within hours calm was restored,
The recent past was like a dream,
The violence fled without regret,
From the drying deck rose steam.

A sailors first storm is a nightmarish thing,
Driving fear into the heart and soul,
Once over it reveals just how sweet life really is,
The enlightenment achieved is worth the fearful toll.

The Search for the Berserk Continues

Photo: Barbara VeigaThe Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin is heading north from McMurdo Sound and will continue to search for the missing Norwegian yacht Berserk along the western coastline of the Ross Sea.

“We have exhausted all the possibilities, our search has been very meticulous and we have searched all the area three times from the Southern end of McMurdo Sound, north to Franklin Island,” said Captain Paul Watson. “I am sorry to report that we have found only the lifeboat and contents from the lifeboat in two separate locations. The was found 45 miles north of where the distress signal was issued, and it was unoccupied. The contents of the lifeboat were found 10 miles south of where the distress signal was issued. The conditions have been perfect both in the calm flatness of the water, and with visibility of flying conditions. If there were debris, a capsized vessel, or evidence of the missing sailors, we would have found it. In short there was nothing to be found.”

This morning, the Sea Shepherd crew searched the waters around Franklin Island. There is a remote possibility that the Berserk could have been forced northward by the storm; Sea Shepherd will investigate that possibility. The search has not been called off. Sea Shepherd is in contact with New Zealand Search and Rescue and will continue to search for the Berserk until the search is officially called off.

The Sea Shepherd helicopter with pilot Chris Aultman logged 21 hours in the air for this search. Sea Shepherd very much appreciates that the McMurdo base assisted us with helicopter fuel to allow for an extended range for the search. The Steve Irwin searched in a grid pattern covering the entire area of McMurdo Sound. The Steve Irwin also deployed a small boat crew to search areas where the larger ship could not venture.

Photo: Barbara VeigaThe Sea Shepherd crew was pleased that weather and sea conditions were absolutely perfect for a search. “Finding a small blue, mostly submerged water packet in such a large area demonstrates just how careful our search has been,” said Steve Irwin sailing master Malcolm Holland from Australia. “If there was anything to be found, we found it.”

Sea Shepherd discovered that the EPIRB (emergency beacon) was inside the vessel. It was designed to issue a distress signal for 24 hours but only transmitted for 45 minutes. It was designed to transmit from a depth of 10 meters and be manually activated. The device was not found. This could mean the device was activated from inside a sinking vessel and stopped transmitting after the vessel sank beneath 10 meters of water. This evidence suggests that the Berserk sank at the position where the distress signal was issued, and that it sank rapidly without the possibility for the crew to escape. The combination of heavy seas, 155-kilometer winds, negative 50 degree Celsius temperatures, deadly ice growlers, and a steel hulled vessel all contributed to this tragedy.

“These were brave men, experienced men, but the odds against them were staggering in the full face of nature’s fury,” said Captain Watson. “They were, however, here in the true spirit of Amundsen, they knew the risks and they chose to take them, and thus all three were masters of their own fate and captains of their own souls.”

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been honored to participate in this historic search, but we regret that the outcome has not been a happy one.

Captain Watson issued a statement saying, “I do want to thank my crew, especially my sailing master Malcolm Holland from Australia for directing the search operations, Helicopter pilot Chris Aultman of the United States for spending 21 hours searching the area by air, Cassandra Smith from Australia for spotting the life raft, watch officers Nuño Ramos Fernandez of Spain and Luis Correia De Pinho of Australia for their vigilance, Security Officer Jeffrey Milstein of the United States for his rescue operational experience, and photographer Bárbara Veiga of Brazil for documenting the evidence. Thanks also to the rest of my crew for working long hours and their efforts. And a special thank you to New Zealand Search and Rescue for coordinating this effort so efficiently from so far away.”

Then all of McMurdo Sound from Backyard Bay and Inaccessible, north to Cape Bird, including off the coast from Cape Royds to Cape Bird. Then all the way from Cape Bird to Geiki Bay in excellent search conditions – searching a wide band along the ice edge. From there, due east 20 nautical miles and south back to the vessel. Then a corridor flight parallel to the Steve Irwin in an area west of Beaufort Island where the life raft was discovered, and northward a further 40 nautical miles. Then a search from the point where the Berserk lifeboat was discovered and northward a further 40 nautical miles. The helicopter then searched a track between the lifeboat position and Bird Point. Debris from the lifeboat was found near Horseshoe Bay. The helicopter did a transit near Franklin Island and searched the shallow waters around the island. Finally a northward run up to the 166 E Longitude line near the Ross Sea western shore.

A Cruel Sacrifice Beneath the Dark Slopes of Erebus

(click to enlarge)We are leaving the Ross Sea now, making our way back 2400 nautical miles to Hobart in Tasmania. It is not a happy departure. Three men, explorers from the Norwegian yacht Berserk, more than likely lie entombed in McMurdo Sound beneath a frigid dark shroud of inky water, churning with newly forming sea ice that is rapidly congealing into an ugly brown salty slush that preludes the reformation of the ice pack, as once again, Antarctica reclaims its frigid grip from a retreating summer.
Bobbing like giant corks, pieces of dense old ice known as growlers may hold the key as to the fate of the Berserk. Ranging in size from a suitcase to a house, these ugly foreboding chunks of cobalt blue, black, and crystal clear boulders of ice bob menacingly like deadly mines just below the surface. A small boat tossed from a heaving sea onto one of these floating horrors can become stove so quickly and efficiently that a vessel could sink within seconds. Not enough time to even get out upon the deck, especially when that deck is being mercilessly flogged with sheets of sharp sea ice in the demonic hand of a horrific southern wind.
A growler can split a steel hull open like it were glass, rapidly sending tons of frigid water into the boat as the sea sucks the vessel down into the briny darkness of the depths, before the sailors even have a chance to comprehend their untimely fate. As the icy grasp of the sea swallows the small boat, the EPIRB and a lifeboat are released with a pressure switch and rise to the surface. It was that distress signal that alerted the world to the fact that the Norwegian 14-meter yacht Berserk with her three crewmembers had disappeared from the world of the living.
The sea can be a severely unforgiving place, and the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea in particular can be extremely cruel to mariners.
When I first received word that a marine distress signal had been received from the Norwegian flagged Berserk in McMurdo Sound, I took one look out the wheelhouse window of my ship the Steve Irwin, and thought that if the seas and the weather were anything like what we were experiencing at the time, I could not imagine how awful of a situation the sailors on that tiny boat were in.

Photo: Barbara VeigaAs it turned out, the situation 200 miles to the west of us where theBerserk was at the time the distress signal was issued, was worse, far worse. The winds were screaming down off the glaciers and the Antarctic Plateau, whipping around Mount Terror and howling down the ice laced black lava slopes of Mount Erebus, funneling into the sound at 155 kilometers an hour. With the wind chill, the temperature had dropped to negative 50 degrees Celsius. There was no doubt those boys were in trouble and they knew it. But all they could have done was ride it out. There was no safe port, no refuge, and no quiet and calm corner of the sound to give them hope. Just Mount Erebus to the east, rising like its dark brooding namesake, to herald a voyage to the underworld beneath the sign that proclaims, “Abandon hope ye shall who enter here.”
As mariners, we did the only thing we could. We responded. The New Zealand Navy vessel Wellington was closer, but had suffered ice damage and was limping back north to New Zealand having had three of their lifeboats ripped from their decks into the howling sea.
British Antarctic explorer Apsley Cherry-Gerrard in his book The Worst Journey in the World, described this area exactly when he spoke of his experiences from Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s base camp on Ross Island in 1911. One hundred years later, not much has changed. The stark white barren hills are as hauntingly beautiful as they are deadly, proclaiming quite boldly that this is a dangerous place of extremes where humans venture at their own great personal risk.
Two days before, I stood on Roosevelt Island, some 20 miles in from the sea from the Bay of Whales on the other end of the indescribably awesome Ross Ice Shelf. It was like the alien surface of Pluto with an eerie whiteness impossible to describe. The winds roared across the stark plateau with a vengeance, whipping my hat off my head and sending it across the polished flatness of the surface faster than I could retrieve it. I wrapped a Norwegian flag around my head to keep my ears from being frostbitten.
I had the Norwegian flag in my hand because we were there to commemorate the landing of Roald Amundsen exactly one hundred years before, as he set up the base camp for his successful race to be the first to the South Pole. We were there because I felt it was an excellent place to announce that now that we had driven the Japanese whalers from the Southern Ocean, it was time to oppose the outlaw whalers of Norway in the North Atlantic. And thus the crew posed with a banner and the Norwegian flag to respectfully honor Amundsen’s achievement, and to appeal to Norway to recognize this achievement by ending the killing of whales.
Truthfully, we were not that optimistic or naïve to expect that our request would be honored, so I felt what better place than the Bay of Whales at Amundsen’s base camp to announce that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society would be returning to Norway to once again oppose Norwegian whaling. Norwegian whaling is more blatantly illegal than Japanese whaling. The Norwegians have not chosen to insult the world’s intelligence by pretending that they are killing whales for science. In Norway, is it very much about the money and thus it is a violation of the global moratorium on commercial whaling.
We were set to release the photos and the story of the announcement at the Bay of Whales when I received the call from the New Zealand Search and Rescue centre that a distress signal had been received from the Norwegian vessel Berserk. As mariners, the call to assist in the search for the Berserk became our priority.
We turned our bow westward and into the most fearsome onslaught of wind, ice, sea spray, and heaving swells. Erebus, looming over Ross Island, was not going to make it easy to approach the gates of hell as McMurdo Sound had become.
For 16 hours we took on the rage of the sea, until suddenly, the ocean gave up the fight and a calm stillness spread across the horizon as the swells flattened out, the sun beamed down with relative warmth, and visibility became perfect. We launched the helicopter and began a meticulous search pattern of the entire sound, finding nothing until the morning of February 25th when we came across the eight-man Avon life raft from the Berserk drifting 45 miles north of where the distress signal first occurred.
And that was that – except for the life raft and later some ration and first aid packets from the life raft, not a trace of the yacht or her crew, no oil on the surface, no clothing or other debris in the sea.
The tragedy reminded us of just how fragile our lives are and how quickly nature can snatch our most precious possession from us.
It also reminded me that although we landed at the Bay of Whales to send a message to Norway to end whaling, the fact remained that the Norwegian men on the Berserk were still our fellow human beings. We began our search with hope that we could find them, and ended the search in sadness that we had not.
Admunsen escaped the tragedy that took the lives of some of the brave men of the 1911 British Antarctic Expedition. One hundred years later, Antarctica continues to extract its lethal tribute of sacrifice from the human spirit that continues to challenge it.
All of us on the Steve Irwin, volunteers from nations around the world share the loss of these men with their families and loved ones. We did not know them, but in searching for them we experienced concern, compassion, hope, and remorse. We also deeply felt a connectedness that wherefore they had gone, any of us could follow, and that nature in all her magnificent beauty and demonic fury does not hold favorites. And thus we felt their loss as we glimpsed the fragility that all of us as humans are burdened with.
To their families, we can only say, we tried. We scoured the entire search area three times by air and sea, and we searched for them as if they were our own brothers, for in truth they were! Brothers united by different goals, but sharing the rare awesome passion for adventure and knowledge that for a century has brought men and women like us to these remote, frozen, and forlorn shores.

The Life Raft for the Norwegian Sailboat Berserk Has Been Found

(NZT) Sea Shepherd helicopter pilot Chris Aultman spotted an Avon 8-person lifeboat in the sea at the position of 76 Degrees 40 Minutes and 43.2 Seconds South, and 166 Degrees 01 Minutes and 50.7 seconds East.
The position was only two miles from the Steve Irwin. The lifeboat is being recovered, and the description of the life raft matches the characteristics of one on the Berserk. New Zealand Search and Rescue has been notified.
The liferaft was unoccupied, half filled with water, encrusted with ice and the canopy had been clearly torn half off by strong winds. The condition of the seas at the time of the recovery were ideal – glass smooth waters, no swells, clear skies, and excellent visibility.
The position in which the raft was discovered is 45 miles North of the position where the distress signal was issued and is consistent with the drift and wind.

The crew is confident that if the yacht Berserk were still afloat it would not have drifted as far north as the liferaft, and would have been discovered. All indications are that the Berserk has sunk and that it sank very quickly. The conditions at the time were extremely high winds, extremely low temperatures, very heavy seas, and numerous and very dangerous growlers.
Captain Paul Watson regrets to say that the three missing sailors are most likely lost at sea and the recovery of their bodies is very unlikely. The shorelines have been swept in search of survivors.
“We will continue searching, but the boat and debris would not have drifted further North than this raft, and we have done a very extensive and meticulous search of the area between the positions where the distress signal was issued and the raft was found. In my opinion, the conditions at the time of the distress call presented some very serious threats to such a small vessel. Considering that the distress signal was automatically sent and the lifeboat appears to have been released after the vessel was submerged, my opinion, and I hope I am wrong, is that the Berserk sank rapidly at the point where the distress signal was first detected in a depth of about 500 meters and a distance some six miles off shore at the position of 77 Degrees and 25 Minutes South and 166 Degrees and03 minutes East. Considering the extreme conditions it is unlikely, but not impossible that any of the crew were able to leave the vessel before it was lost. Unfortunately we have seen no evidence of survivors.”

– Klokka 0130 ringde Jarle Andhøy hit til Hovudredningssentralen i Bodø og sa at han og ein frå mannskapet er 100 miles frå Scott-basen. Han kunne fortelje at de er i god form, men at det er mykje vind i området, seier redningsleiar Finn Tore Sortland ved Hovudredningssentralen i Nord-Noreg.

Betyr det at tre framleis er sakna?

–Det stemmer at det er tre igjen på «Berserk» og det er dei vi no leitar etter. Andøy fortalde at det var nokre dagar sidan han hadde vore i kontakt med mannskapet på båten, seier Sortland.

I går søkte båtar og helikopter i tre timar etter den sakna norske seglbåten «Berserk» i Sørishavet, men det er enno ikkje funne spor etter fartøyet. Ein åttedel av området er gjennomsøkt.

Det er eit helikopter frå Sea Sheperd-fartøyet «Steve Irwin» som er i lufta for å leite etter den sakna norske båten. Det er fine leiteforhold i området med god sikt og ikkje så sterk vind.

Navigasjonsoffiser om bord på «Steve Irwin», Mal Holland, seier til NRK ved 23-tida i kveld at helikopteret er i ferd med å fylle drivstoff for å gjere klar til eit søk nummer to. Då var klokka 11 på føremiddagen der nede.

Holland fortel at dei konsentrerer seg om å leite på sjøen og langs strendene, og at helikopteret ikkje har leitt etter dei to som kan vere på land.

- Både vi og den newzealandske redningstenesta har prøvd å kome i kontakt med «Berserk» via radio, men utan å lukkast, seier han.

Det er ikkje funne spor etter den sakna norske siglbåten 'Berserk'.
